Information About Koi Pond Design New Jersey Customers Will Want To Know

By Essie Osborn

Koi ponds have an enchanting charm about them and make a lovely addition to one's property. However proper care must be given to their planning, installation, and maintenance in order for these playful, brightly-colored fish to thrive. If considering koi pond design New Jersey property owners must first learn what features these structures require if they are to look nice and keep their inhabitants healthy.

Building the pond a size large enough to accommodate this species' rapid growth and allowing space for more fish to be added later but not so large that the fish "disappear" inside it and cannot be easily seen is important. The smallest appropriate size is 1500 gallons and the largest is 15,000 gallons. The sides should be steep and without steps or ledges, and the depth needs to be at least 6 feet to provide ample exercise room for the fish and to deter predatory animals.

Carefully choosing the location is also important. Generally a shadier spot is preferable because the sun can cause the water to overheat and encourage growth of algae. Areas with pine trees should be avoided since needles will inevitably drop into the pond and may cause damage to the filtration pump.

There is the option of either lining the pond with rubber or filling it with concrete. The former are good because they are flexible and can be changed without hassle if needed, and they help maintain an ideal water pH level, although they do have edges which may stick out and be hard to camouflage. Concrete is durable and tidy in appearance but it can raise the water's pH too high, necessitating the application of a rubber coating that will prevent this problem.

The filter is essential to the healthy operation of the pond as it both removes wastes and impurities from the water and converts ammonia compounds into harmless nitrates. A larger filter is normally best to meet the pond's filtration needs. Larger pipes are also recommended because they lower the pressure required for the pump to circulate the water, resulting in reduced operating costs.

It's also necessary to have at least one bottom drain, these are needed to properly ensure filtration of wastes. Rocks should not be placed in the bottom, as these can be very challenging to clean and will encourage growth of bacteria. Installing a skimmer is also recommended for keeping the surface of the pond free of organic debris and prevents it from winding up in the bottom.

Jets should be installed as well because they create a current for the fish to swim around in, help direct leaves into the skimmer, and elevate the water's oxygen content. Some lights are great for nighttime enjoyment of the fish, as it makes them more visible, and special ultraviolet lights will be effective in limiting algae growth.

Planning and executing the design and construction of koi ponds is a joint effort between both the customer and the professional he or she hires to make this vision a reality. The contractor should offer experience and provable skill for building ponds but also be mindful of the customer's personal preferences.
